Applying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Cancer Counseling

Jodi L. Tangen, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS

Session Description: This presentation will explore the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to work with individuals diagnosed with cancer. Emphasis will be placed on the six components of ACT (acceptance, cognitive defusion, present moment awareness, self-as-context, values, and committed action) and the ways they can be utilized in the context of cancer diagnosis and treatment. A fictionalized case study will be used to conceptualize ways the theory can be concretely applied.

Learning Objectives:

  2. Describe ways that ACT can be applied to work with cancer patients.
